- Smallest of North American birds (with exception of some humming birds)
- Common
- Migration is inconspicuous as they remain all winter long
- Remarkable pendant nest, finely constructed with mosses, cobwebs, lichens, leaf bits, lushly lined with feathers, compared to a cocoon
- Great producer: 8-9 eggs, usually layers eggs due to interior of nest size
- High mortality rate
- Likes a mixed society: chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, brown creepers
- Sometimes appears in substantial numbers
